Great Article on Counterfeit Detection

I just read the slides of a presentation made by Cheryl Tulkoff of DfR Solutions at the SMTA Empire Chapter on June 18, 2013  called “Counterfeit Prevention & Detection Strategies:  When to Do It, How to Do It”.  You can read it here.

This by far is probably one of the best presentations I’ve ever had the privilege of reading. I especially like the parts on the decision matrix and counterfeit calculators that are illustrated in helping provide clear boundaries and guidelines for mitigation practices. These are great tools in helping contain this ever growing epidemic.

Q: How did NJ Micro Electronic Testing start serving clients throughout the world?
A: We decided to implement a total quality system called ISO 9002 that affects all of the systems and processes in the business and how those processes are managed. Once we received our certification, we further improved our organizational processes by going for AS9100 certification. This improved organizational structure helped us expand our services all over the world.

Q: What happens when you detect a counterfeit component? How is a report put together and who is notified?
A: When a counterfeit is discovered the part is classified as a reject and the customer is notified immediately and given an in-depth report of the suspected problem.

Q: How many counterfeit components do you estimate you have uncovered since the inception of this program?
A: Since 2003 we have uncovered thousands of counterfeit components

Q: What prompted NJ Micro Electronic Testing to start a worldwide investigation on counterfeit electronic component distribution?

A: The main reason was that we had tested components that passed but did not work in the customer’s applications. We then discovered that the products were actually working clones.

Q: Were counterfeit components a problem in the 1990’s?
A: NJ Micro Electronic Testing first began to see counterfeit components in the 1990s.

Q: . How did NJ Micro Electronics get involved in testing components for the military and aerospace industries?
A: In the mid 1980’s we started a high reliability lab within NJ Micro Electronic Testing. Through that expansion NJ Micro Electronic Testing began screening tests for the military and aerospace Industries.
